SUPPLEMENT

International Cooperation in the HLW Management

The different projects concerning the radioactive waste management have been developed by now in Russia and other countries. At the request of the Nordic countries a seminar "International Cooperation on Nuclear Waste Management in the Russian Federation" was organized by IAEA in Vienna 15-17 May 1995. In two working groups at the Seminar participants from the Russian Federation and 17 countries and international organisations co-operating with the Russian Federation in waste management projects recognised the need for setting up a contact group of experts to assist in coordinating their efforts.

As a result of the seminar the Contact Expert Group for International Radwaste Projects was established by participants at the follow-up meeting held in Stockholm in September 1995. Terms of Reference were developed and the IAEA was asked to perform Secretariat duties (B.Semenov, CEG Executive Secretary, IAEA, Vienna). All countries and organisations providing resources to support waste management projects in the Russian Federation are eligible to join the CEG.

The 1st CEG meeting was held in March 1996 in Moscow and from 1 April 1996 the CEG Secretariat (1 1/2 person) has been established by the Director General at the IAEA.

The 2nd CEG meeting was held in Vienna in September 1996 and the Plan of Action for 1996-1997 was considered and approved. The meeting also reviewed the progress in establishing a database of about 100 cooperation projects under way, planned or suggested and outlined steps for its practical use to harmonise the cooperation, avoid overlapping and concentrate efforts on more important, high priority projects.

The 3rd CEG meeting took place in Brussels in January 1997 and resulted in a number of important, action oriented decisions and recommendations directed to strengthening cooperation in the most important high priority areas.

The 4th CEG meeting took place in St.-Petersbourg (Russia) in June 1997. The proceedings are now under preparation by CEG Secretariat.

At present the CEG consists of eleven members (Belgium, France, Finland, Germany, Norway, Russian Federation, Sweden, UK, USA, European Union, and International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis - IIASA) and three observers (Japan, Nordic Environmental Finance Corporation - NEFCO and International Science and Technology Center - ISTC).

Table shows the titles of Russian projects submitted and considered by CEG as of 06 February 1997.
